OfflineA Little About Me
I used SP as a route info source before. After seeing a familiar name of a Summitpost contributor in a paper summit log, gave it one more thought. (The name was Joseph Bullough! ) So I started contributing, mostly the winter stuff. Mostly the adventures of Team UINTA :) You know, everything looks more pretty with a snowcover on it :)
I am fully aware that this stuff is a bit unusual for SP. The more I appreciate your good votes :D
Rewind 1: I first discovered "organized" mountain sports in the US in a sort of unlikely place, joining Sierra / PATC outings in NoVa. Thanks Cliff Noyes for putting up with me :) In Utah, the WMC was "the" club for me (special thanks to Larry Swanson, Walt Haas, Mike Berry, and Steve Pritchett!) until the web stuff such as SP grew out of control to eclipse it.
Rewind 2: Back in the old country, there has been a great bureaucratic schism in the mountaneering sports, separating the "alpinists" who climbed summits from the various shades of "tourists" who trekked around them. I belonged to the latter lowly camp, and despite some adventureous trips to the mountains down South (including one well-known to SPers, the Elbrus, guerilla-style), I quickly subscribed to a notion that ski mountaneering and the Great North are way more cool. Participated in, and led my share of, ski backpacking expedition in the Arctics and Siberia, before settling into less-demanding day trips.
Rewind 3: My hometown is located in the middle of a great plain, and I grew up having very little experience with the mountains, except for one Caucasus trek when I was 6. My outdoors have been multi-day road cycling tours in summer, xc skiing in the woods around the city, and later on some o-running. I reconnected with "serious" mountains with the help of outdoor rec program in my alma mater
