Attempted to hike Vasquez Peak today, and didn't make it to the summit. My friend and I tried to use the route described in the "Classic Colorado Summit" book, which starts from the basin below the peak (as opposed to starting at Henderson Mine). The route was a bit of a challenge to find, and where we did hike, it was fairly steep.
Since we had a large amount of late spring snowfall, we made it up to about 12,000 ft before we hit snowfields that were a little too large to try to cross. At least this year, I think the soonest it may be passable is maybe mid-June, after more snow melts down.
Jones Pass up to the trailhead was not yet passable via passenger car (we know...we helped dig someone out) because of snow and pooling water, but in a few weeks it should be fine again.
Looking forward to trying this again later this summer...
