Strangely enough, my nickname has nothing to do with climbing. I was asked to take a screen name long ago, at a site for people with brain damage. I thought of Moapa Peak, sitting off i-15, alone, stolid, self-reliant - and that became my name.

There is much more to this mountain than the knife-edge ridge. I did have fun on the ridge, but I also enjoyed all the flora and fauna around there. This hike is the best in spring when all the wildflowers are in bloom.

Great day!
Climbed with Jeff (Desert Solitaire) and four others. A great trip with a great team. Fun day with a little bit of rain, but we were back to the cars before the real storm started. It was nice to engage the 4-Low on my 4Runner for the first time during the last 1/4 mile section of the road. It reminded me that desert peak baggers are truly great 4x4 drivers.

A Desert Classic!
A great peak and a great climb with a wonderful team. Led this peak as an official Sierra Club DPS trip. The route was a bit too circuitous for me, but enjoyable nonetheless. Easy class 3 on one or two moves. The knife edge was the most fun - the best reason to climb this peak, in my opinion!
Total round trip time ~ 6 hours. Drops of rain during the descent turned into a downpour later that evening in Vegas. It rained all night and into the whole next day, so we canceled the next day's climb of Bridge mountain.

This was an excellent climb. The scambling was easier than I thought it would be. I got rained on a couple of times while I was climbing up the mountain. The knife-edge on the summit ridge was fun. Great views from the top.

Day 4 of my southern NV/UT tour. Enjoyable peak, but there's only a move or two of 3rd class to negotiate the headwall, and most of the knife edge is a hands-in-pockets walk, which was a bit disappointing. (The most challenging move is getting onto the knife edge ridge from the saddle, and even that can be avoided by following the cairns around the northern side rather than gaining the ridge directly).
I'd hoped to climb Virgin Pk in the afternoon, but the drive there was very long, and I turned back after walking a few miles to the old DPS TH when I figured I'd be lucky to even reach the summit before dark. I don't regret heading out there, though--the old dirt road I hiked along (washed out quite spectacularly in spring 2005) was quite scenic in its own right.
That evening, I drove on to Hurricane, UT, where I found a motel room for a couple of nights. I was pretty excited--my first visit to Zion NP, and if the excellent weather continued to hold, a chance at climbing the Guardian Angels.
