LaPlata Run
Summited via the NW approach. Trail ran much of the route making it to the summit and back to the parking lot in 2 3/4 hours. Only person on the summit this day.

blustery October day
It was cold, windy, but an otherwise wonderful day. There was less snow than we expected, but one could hardly complain about the views anyway.

From Lake Creek Trailhead.
I saw La Plata Peak from Mount Elbert's summit a few days ago, so I thought to give it a try.
My hike started at Lake Creek Trailhead at 7:30 am. The views were amazing. Got to the top at noon. Took a few pictures of the snow covered summit and of the other ranges to the east and west.
Went to Independence Pass summit after the climb to see la Plata Peak touched by the last sunrays of the day.
La Plata Peak 4,377 m (14,361 ft)

I climbed with my father and some of his work friends. Climbed from the South at Winfield. Another great alternative, as we didn't see anyone until nearly the summit. Some steep parts, but overall a great mountain with a nice summit. Distinctive shape really made it cool.

Ellingwood Ridge
The ridge was challenging enough without the weather fighting me and my group the whole way up. Rain, hail, snow, and a strong wind all day. An exciting and fun route, tougher than expected. Quite the class 3 adventure.

Exciting ridge scramble especially with full packs in a hailstorm so powerful it was like being in a giant popcorn popper.

Started hiking at 640pm and summited at about 9pm in the pitch dark. Had the mountain to myself!

NW Ridge
Enjoyed one of the most beautiful days of hiking I've ever experienced in CO during my La Plata solo hike- blue skies all day long and minimal wind. NW Ridge route was steep, but beautiful, and the views of Ellingwood Ridge after gaining the ridge were spectacular! La Plata is now one of my favorites in the Sawatch range.

I saw no other humans until I began my descent, and they were all coming from 82. Awesome lonely day before the storms hit. Made the drive home interesting.

Success!
Summited from SH 82 trailhead in 2 hours and 50 minutes. This is definitely the steepest 14er standard route I have done in the Sawatch. Enjoyed the summit for over 2.5 hours before heading back down. I had the summit to myself for the first hour or so before the first wave of folks hit the summit.

Another beautiful trail in the Sawatch - LaPlata Basin is very scenic. Scree to the saddle was miserable on ascent and (wet)descent. Two false summits both tricked me. Clouds billowed up w/in 15 minutes of reaching summit, first thunder 5 minutes later. Left in a hurry, but hail w/ lightning moved in before we could reach the saddle. Does that make it a class 3?!

1st Peak of 2007
Arrived a bit late and started up at 7:40AM from trailhead at route 82. Bright sun and rather warm, reached the snow corniced summit at 11:40 with clouds building all around but bright sun on top. Only took 2.5 hours to descend as I was racing to beat an oncoming storm, back to the car at 2:38 as it started to rain. My 27th 14'er and first of '07..........Sweet!
