Icy Monday
Took a Monday off for some winter hiking and since this a winter requirement for 35er club figured give it a go. The plan was for a nice snowshoe but upon arrival there was no snow in sight on lovely sunny February day. So left the snowshoes in car and head up trail. Unfortunately the snow melt left huge sections of trail as complete slick sheets of ice. So without my microspikes or crampons was forced to bush wack around or walk slowly on flat sections. lovely picnic on top then on way down glissaded a touch on ice sections and got going too fast a couple times. slightly more adventurous than you would think for this gradual easy climb. nice day.
Climbed again 6/9/17 since one of 35ers mandatory for both winter and summer. Rainy until top got better going later as I traversed over to Graham.
Eighty four minutes from the northeastern trail head to the fire tower. Still plenty of snow and I got snowed on during the descent.

BL and Graham
Cake Walk to the summits. The trail from Millbrook road was hardly the workout we were hoping for but instead a nice easy enjoyable hike. We flew over to Graham first along the well defined herd path. We had to climb up on the stucture to get the view but it was worth it.Then back to Balsam lake Mt. Took us maybe 45 minutes between the 2. BL Firetower was locked but I still got the eyecandy from the top stairs .an enchanted feeling around the summit and in the forest here. Just a nice half day hike..JW

views from a firetower
Part of a backpack. My first time to this forested over summit so I climbed the firetower for the views. No stairs here so I climbed up the metal struts to the first landing.

Forever Views
A gem of a hike in the sleepy western Catskills. The views from the firetower stretch on forever. Scared up a big hare on the summit.

BLM
Easy going up hard coming down, i recommend the dry Brooke ridge trial going up, more enjoyable, failed to top out on graham this day, but BLM was awsome

Balsam Lake Mountain
Climbed via the Balsam Lake Mountain Trail. A short but difficult ascent due to the shushy snow on the trail to the summit. Great views from the firetower on top.
